The Twelve Steps were first introduced by Fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous, through their book, Alcoholics Anonymous, which was published in 1939. The Spiritual Principles were not new, they have been around and had been used for hundreds of years by many others. What was new — was the introduction of a codified approach to using the Spiritual Principles to achieve a desired result — which was, recovery from the nearly always fatal condition of alcoholism.
For as long as history has been recorded – alcoholism had been a condition that destroyed individuals, families, friends, villages, tribes, and entire social communities. While scientists, doctors, medical researchers and academics have sought to find a cure for alcoholism — to this date, a cure has still not been found. In nearly every case, with the exception of a very small percentage – alcoholism nearly always ends in a fatal conclusion.
When the news began to spread that a small group of alcoholics had found a way to achieve and maintain sobriety (total abstinence from alcohol), and recover from a seemingly hopeless condition of mind and body — and to re-create their damaged lives, and once again become useful, efficient, productive and valuable members of families, communities and society — over a long period of time — others, who were plagued with afflictions, addictions and obsessions – began to wonder if “The 12 Steps” might be able to help them, too.
Today, Alcoholics Anonymous, has covered the globe, and has a presence in nearly every country and community — boasting a membership of over two million members and nearly one-hundred-fifty thousand Groups. In addition to this — over 300other individual anonymous organizations have have formed to use the 12 Steps as a Treatment Program to deal with their problems.
12 Step Groups .com is not affiliated with AA, and it is not affiliated with any other Anonymous Organization. We are simply individuals that have an interest in the 12 Steps as a Design for Living, a Spiritual Discipline, and as a spiritual tool-kit to help us solve our problems.
